Quality and Safety Leadership Fellowship. The Clinical Fellowship in Quality and Safety Leadership at Nationwide Children’s Hospital provides fellows the experience and tools to drive improvements in quality of care and patient safety and ultimately lead quality and safety programs in hospitals and hospital systems. A six-month fetal imaging fellowship is available to candidates who have successfully completed an accredited fellowship in pediatric radiology. Radiology Informatics. A one-year radiology informatics fellowship is available to candidates who have successfully completed an accredited radiology residency or pediatric radiology fellowship. The Diagnostic Radiology Residency Program at Case Western Reserve University is proud to offer residents two clinical and four non-clinical professional pathways. Each pathway offers unique and individualized opportunities for interested residents to pursue longitudinal certifications and projects as well as acquire additional skills and expertise. The overall goal of these pathways is to promote professional growth beyond the traditional clinical residency curriculum. All pathways are fully supported by the department and participating residents receive formal recognition and credentials upon completion.

Open Radiology Fellowships

Nuclear Medicine

Our Residency program in conjunction with the Division of Nuclear Medicine offers interested residents the opportunity to complete a 16-month pathway to gain dual certification in Diagnostic Radiology and subspecialty certification in Nuclear Radiology. Upon the completion of their regular 4-year residency training, the resident will be eligible to sit for the Nuclear Medicine boards without the need for an additional 1-year Nuclear Medicine fellowship.

Early Specialization in Interventional Radiology (ESIR)

The Early Specialization in Interventional Radiology (ESIR) pathway in conjunction with the Division of Vascular and Interventional Radiology is designed for Diagnostic Radiology residents who demonstrate an early interest in Interventional Radiology fellowship. This pathway meets the qualifications set forth by the Society of Interventional Radiology to complete an increased number of interventional procedure rotations throughout their 4-year training schedule. After completion of diagnostic radiology residency with ESIR designation, candidates will then apply for the Independent IR Pathway through The Match and be eligible to complete this fellowship training in one year instead of two years at participating programs.

Education

The Education pathway allows residents interested in medical education to actively participate in the many educational opportunities at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. Residents apply at the end of their first year of residency and receive dedicated time off from clinical duties to pursue educational activities. The pathway responsibilities are flexible and include preparing and presenting lectures and educational material to medical students, radiology residents, non-radiology residents, fellows, and technologists. Selected residents are provided resources to assist them and receive training on how to become a better educator. They are encouraged to initiate and complete at least one comprehensive longitudinal educational project during their residency.

The Education pathway aims include providing the time and resources to interested residents to become well-rounded and knowledgeable educators in their future career in academic radiology.

Quality and Safety

The Quality and Safety pathway gives interested residents the opportunity to gain expertise in the increasingly important field of patient care quality and safety. Residents apply at the end of their first year of Radiology residency and receive dedicated time off clinical duties. Part of their responsibilities include attending departmental and hospital wide quality and safety meetings, participating in Morbidity and Mortality conferences, and organizing and supervising Quality Improvement projects conducted by other Radiology residents. As resident representatives at these meetings, they will play an integral role in highlighting key issues and be enrolled as a department safety coach. As part of the pathway, residents will receive individualized training on Quality and Safety such as how to conduct root cause analysis and project design/implementation. They will work closely with our department’s entire Quality and Safety team.

This pathway aims to prepare selected residents to be leaders in the Quality and Safety field in their future careers.

Informatics

The Informatics pathway provides interested residents a platform to gain expertise in the field of Imaging and Medical Informatics. Residents apply at the end of their first year of radiology residency and receive dedicated time off clinical duties to participate in informatics related projects. They will work closely with our department’s informatics team including the Director of Informatics and Vice Chairman for Information Technology. The selected residents receive dedicated training in Imaging Informatics and are encouraged to complete at least one comprehensive project during their residency.

The Informatics pathway aims to train leaders in Imaging and Medical Informatics, a field closely associated with Radiology.

Research

Pediatric Radiology Fellowship Programs

The Research pathway gives the opportunity to interested residents to participate in long term research projects during their residency under the supervision of a mentor. Interested residents apply at the end of their first year of Radiology residency under the guidance of a research mentor. They will receive dedicated time off clinical duties in a longitudinal fashion during the second and third years of residency as well as six months of dedicated research time in their fourth year. Selected residents are encouraged to apply for regional and national resident research grants. Residents receive strong support for academic research and paper presentations with funded conferences with approval and acceptance.

The Research pathway aims to train future research radiologists with a focus in an academic career.

VA Advanced Fellowship Program in Medical Informatics

History and Purpose

In 1995, the Office of Academic Affiliations (OAA) started VA's Advanced Fellowships Program in Medical Informatics. The information and education systems needed to support healthcare delivery were becoming increasingly complex. Information transfer, decision making, education, and research were becoming more dependent on emerging information technologies; but only a small cadre of individuals with expertise in medical informatics existed in VA. To respond to this need, OAA, in collaboration with the Health Services Research and Development Service and the Chief Information Office, started the VA Medical Informatics Fellowship Program. Its purposes were to enhance skills of health professionals in medical informatics, to increase recruitment and retention of medical informatics specialists within VA, and to contribute to the application of medical informatics within VA's patient care delivery system.

Program Overview

The VA Medical Informatics Fellowship Program provides two years of post-residency / postdoctoral research and educational learning opportunities to board eligible or board certified physicians and dentists and postdoctoral associated health professionals at competitively selected VA sites. Fellows spend their time in research and educational activities relevant to VA. Mentors of national stature provide guidance to fellows in rich learning environments. Graduates are expected to be role models in leading, developing, conducting, and evaluating innovative medical informatics programs.

Fellowship Requirements

Physicians and Dentists. Eligible physicians must have graduated from a residency accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or American Osteopathic Association (AOA); be board certified or demonstrate active pursuit of board certification; and have an active, unrestricted U.S. medical license. They must demonstrate strong interest in medical informatics and the likelihood of ability to succeed in a career incorporating medical informatics for service to US veterans. International medical graduates must have an Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certificate that is valid indefinitely. Applicants must be citizens of the United States.

Postdoctoral Associated Health Professionals. Eligible non-physicians must have graduated from an accredited doctoral program that prepares them for eligibility for VA employment. This can be a doctoral program in a clinical discipline such as dentistry, optometry, podiatry, pharmacy or audiology / speech pathology, a PhD program in computer science or other relevant discipline, or medical school graduates who do not meet the criteria to apply as a physician. They must demonstrate strong interest in medical informatics and the likelihood of ability to succeed in a career incorporating medical informatics for service to US veterans. Applicants must be citizens of the United States.
